AMONG BEARS

Adventures in the Alaskan wilderness

In 2002, the then 25-year-old biologist from Bern traveled to Alaska for the first time to observe the salmon during their spawning migration – his childhood dream. But where there are salmon, bears are usually not far away. A surprise encounter with a mother bear and her three cubs, followed by an attack, was the key experience for my enthusiasm for these fascinating creatures. Since then, he has spent the summer in Alaska whenever possible to observe the grizzlies and document their lives. Often traveling alone, David lives in the wilderness for months at a time.

With a great deal of empathy, time and patience during his expeditions, the doctor of biology has succeeded in building up a relationship of trust with some wild bears. Individual bears have long since become accustomed to David. He gives them names – Balu, Bruno, Luna or Joya, to name but a few. In connection with the current return of the brown bear to Switzerland, David explains the resulting problems and how humans and bears coexist in our densely populated cultural landscape. David Bittner’s pictures and films are among the most exciting and spectacular images ever taken of encounters with wild bears.

David Bittner will also be happy to design a tailor-made presentation for your event in your club, community, company or organization and will be happy to provide you with information about references.
